Today I started out at NLMS, doing an observation of IWB use for my graduate school project. I am getting a lot of good ideas to use for training when we implement IWBs in the schools generally.
Later in the morning I went to see Belinda Branson. We are working on a video/powerpoint presentation for Dr. Martin to show to the Chamber of Commerce. He wants footage from convocation and our version has some video/audio sync problems. I will need to do some editng to get this worked out and to pull out just the sections he wants.
After school I did a Promethean workshop at Catawba Springs. I had pretty good attendance (16-17). The teachers seem very enthusiastic. I will return for more training later.

Happy Halloween,
Today I went to Lowder in the morning to work on a Palm for the new reading teacher. We got it going. Later I finished the computer survey for Iron Station and got Pumpkin Primary ready for their 50's day green screen pictures.

Today I did three Promethean workshops at East High, filling in for Lee O'Neal. It was strange teaching at my Alma Mater.
The workshops went well and I did some upgrades and troubleshooting on the board and computer. The resource pack still need to be installed, but the discs are missing. Jeff Gavin is looking into it and will contact me

In the morning I researched webcammax for Kiser and showed it to Lee O'Neal. This is a great program for only $50.
In the afternoon I did an L-core refresher at Catawba Springs and set a date for the Promethean workshop.
Unfortunately the meeting at Catawba Springs ran late and I missed the meeting at St. James and the NCwise meeeting at 4 p.m.

In the morning I did research on web cam software for Kiser's news show and got ready for my Education City workshop
At 1 p.m. I went to St. James to work with Carolyn Marcum on school web pages. We successfully re-linked a number of pages.
I then went to Lowder to do a workshop on education city afterschool.

This was an optional teacher workday.
I started out at Rock Springs where I taught two workshops. The first was an hour on advanced e-mail features such as distribution lists and calendars.
The second was a two-hour course on photo story. This also went over well with one teacher saying she planned to do a photo story in the future.
In the afternoon I helped Pumpkin Primary install photo story on their lab computers for a workshop they are planning.

Started today at the County office. I helped scan tests for Battlground and worked on finishing Rachel Masters's class movie.
I also looked into Ustream for the news broadcast at Kiser. I still need to find an app that will broadcast pre-recoreded videos onto ustream. Doug Clark is taking the lead on this and will be looking for a web camera to order.
I also attended the promethean workshop at North Middle.

Wednesday, Oct. 22
I started out today by heading up to Battleground. Their scanner is jamming because it has a rubber wheel falling apart from dry rot. They will come Thursday to scan at the County Office. I also helped Jennifer Dellinger the media specialist get the doc camera to work through the LCD without unhooking cords. It was a moniter setup issue.
I moved on to Lowder where Mr. Welch and I discussed training for Study Island. I am going to do the over-the-phone training Thursday or Friday while covering scanning. I will then teach his staff on Nov. 10.
I did a few rooms of the computer survey at Pumpkin Int. and then went to the mobile to look over study island, and input some L-core classes.
At 3:00 I did the quick L-Core refresher for Massey.
At 3:30 U did a L-core workshop for Kiser. I also spoke to Doug Clark about ustream.ev for their broadcast.

I met with Dr. Desander to discuss my FMLA when the kid gets here.
I then checked scanners and software at Catawba Springs, St. James and Rock Springs. We had some trouble at CS, but we got it working. At St. James they have a teacher who scans remotely. Her's is not responding. I need to e-mail her and get her to try it by right clicking and running as admin.
Also at St. James I set up a date to try and work with Marcum on web site/etc.
At Rock Springs I set up e-mail and photostory workshops for the upcoming workday.
I also ran by ELMS to set up their scanner for Lee.

Started out helping Rachel Masters and her class at Pumpkin Center Intermediate with their grant application movie. I also talked to the EC teacher about putting tux typing on computers in the small lab for her students.
Later I went to Iron Station and helped art teacher Jennifer Childers who is now in charge of the news broadcast. I helped her figure out a way to shoot directly into the computer and edit for later broadcast. She was very happy with the new way of doing it.
I also checked the scanner at Iron Station. The computer attached to it seems to be running, but the person who runs the scanner was not there.

Thursday, Oct. 16
Started out with a meeting at Lowder with Deiree Morrell who is the new web master. I ran over the basics of Quickplace with her and she seems competent.
Later I worked on e-mails and go the promethean workshops squared away with Jeff Gavin at East High. I need to L-Core them.
I met with Lee O'Neal at lunch to disucss scanning of testing next week. We worked out a schedule next week where I will help schools scan at the central office if they need assistance. I agreed to check a number of schools to see how their scanners are doing pre-testing.
I checked Union (good) and went back to Lowder (good) this afternoon.
After lunch I met with Linda Yoder to show her how to add videos into her wikispace.

I worked with Rachel's studetns and we finished up all of the shots we needed for her movie. I need to capture them and do a rough cut by Friday when I will show the kids how to edit.
I spent a good bit of the day answering e-mails, updating my calendar and catching up with things I missed while out sick.
In the afternoon I went to North Brook and did their L-Core refresher. The special area teachers asked about whether they should get academic credit for courses in math, reading, etc. outside their area. I told them I did not know for sure, but that I thought it made sense that they should since it falls in line with SCOS that they teach cross-curricular.

Sick still.
I e-mailed MaryEllen Eaker and Leanne Stroup about the grants they are working on for Ed. Foundation. Both have strong grant proposals and stand a good chance. I stayed out today recovering but went in at 3:00 to do a web page update at Lowder. The workshop went well even though quickplace gave us problems as usual.
The new counselor has volunteered to help get everyone's pages up and running. I will meet with her soon to show her how.
Mr. Welch wants me to help him figure out how to get Study Island set up as well as how to update education city. I need to come by and work with him on that.

Friday, Oct. 10 - I'm BAAACCK!
Steven has successfully unblocked my blog on the school network so I can resume my daily blog!
Today was incredibly hectic
I started up at North Brook trying to fix a dibels problem. Mrs. Turner's computers won't let me install the Palm software so I can't get Dibels/Mclass on them. They act like they have deep freeze, but they don't show the icon. I have e-mailed Steven for advice, but it looks like it will need a work order.
While at NB I talked to two teachers who are preparing ed foundation grants. Mrs. Eaker has a good grant and I am waiting on the stand quote for the Smartboard. When I get it I will send her the excel sheet with all the prices.
I also spoke with Ms. Stroup about a music grant. She is going to look over the ed foundation application over the weekend. We will meet Monday at Childers to knock out some ideas.
Next I went to Childers and did Google Earth workshops for 4th and 3rd grades. I also talked to the 4th grade teachers about the online writing workshop they are taking.
A few teachers also showed interest in going down to Catawba Springs to get introduced to the promethean board.

Today I went to Lowder to present at the Principals meeting. Dr. Martin confirmed my suspicions that he wants to put Promethean boards in all elementary classrooms.
Tuesday, Sept 9, 2008
Today I went to North Brook. I met with Mary Ellen Eaker who wants to write a grant proposal for the Education Foundation grant. She discussed writing a grant for a promethean board but we decided instead to go repurpose the existing smartboard in the lab. It was broken years ago when it was installed. Our idea is to put it on a cart and combine it with a new laptopm and speakers so it can be used in kindergarten classrooms. I am going to get her some prices.
I also helped Lee out while I was there. She wanted me to help get their Dibels Palms up and running. Two had gone missing over the summer and two more had sync problems. I will contact Lee on this.
I think I also need to approach Rusty about a tech survey up there. There seems to have been a lot of stuff hoarded and not used in a variety of places.
Next visit I want to meet with the media specialist to check out her ppt machine for displaying over the TV system.

Whew! Busy day.
I started out in Rachel Masters' classroom at Pumpkin Intermediate. We did an hour workshop on handhelds in the classroom. They are showing a little age, but the kids still like them and they still serve a useful purpose.
Next I went down to Catawba Springs. We are doing a survey of all the computers in their school and talking about how they are used. I covered about 8 rooms, starting with lower grades. I generally found that they had several old computers that worked well and one newer one that generally didn't. Several of the "newer" computers were Dell 4300s running Windows ME. These will need to be upgraded before NCwise.
After lunch I went back to the mobile to work on the presentation for the principals meeting on Wednesday.

Friday, Sept. 5
East Lincoln Day.
I started out at Rock Springs. I worked with the media specialist Rebeka Stanton to get her second lab up and running. We discussed the best way to conduct instruction. One option we considered is to move the Smart Board to the small lab where there is a carpeted seating area. Teachers could sign up for this and bring their classes in. We also discussed trainings on web mail and photostory. Rock Springs is also in desperate need of wireless in the mobile units. I also set up an appointment to work with a teacher on a grant next Friday.
Next was Catawba Springs. I spoke with Kristi Smith about several issues.
- The Promethean board installation is mostly done. We discussed moving a newer computer into the room to use with the board. The doc cam will hook up via S-video. They will contact me when the final install is done so we can arrange training.
- She will be hiring a new media specialist soon and I will assist her in settling in tech-wise.
- I'm going to do an assessment of all comps in teacher rooms to see how fit they are for the instuctional uses teachers want to put them to. I will start this on Monday. This would be a good idea at all schools
At St. James I talked with Larry Shouse about plans for the year. He would like me to do workshops on their two bluetooth tables and star panels to get them in use. We also decided to look at a workshop on memio since he already has one.
I also met with Cynthia Jarvis, the new media specialist. We discussed a lot of orientation-type ideas. She is very interested in learning video production. I will come by next week and show her LanSchool

I spent a while this morning at Pumpkin Intermediate helping them with their powerpoint broadcast. The old Dell 4100 died and since ITS is not supporting these older machines, I moved one from the mini lab and helped set it up. Having the ability to continuously broadcast a presentation to all school TVs is a great assest that teacher and students at Pumpkin and elsewhere have come to expect.
I also finished tallying my workshops from last year. Here are the results.
Regular School Year
Schools served – 14
Grades served – PreK-5
Total workshops taught (during and after school)– 33
Total hours of staff development offered – 41
Total number of teachers attending workshops – 296
Total number of renewal credits received – 37.7 (or 377 contact hours)
Cyber College June 2008
Total workshops taught – 3
Total hours of staff development taught – 25
Total number of teachers attending workshops – 18
Total number of renewal credits received – 13.5 (or 135 contact hours)
Year Totals
Total workshops taught – 36
Total hours of staff development taught – 66
Total number of teachers attending workshops – 314
Total number of renewal credits received – 51.2 (or 512 contact hours)
Actually the totals don't include Aug. and Sept. of 2007 because Peggy was entering things in L-Core and peopel were signing up manually. So it's actually higher.
Yowza that's a lot of teaching!

Wednesday Sept. 3, 2008
Whew! lots going on today.
This morning I worked on finishing up rosters of last year's workshops and tallying the numbers of teachers taught and workshops offered. Later in the morning I went to G.E. Massey to help re-sync a Palm that had been transferred to another teacher. When I arrived I spent a few minutes talking with principal Kirby Oldham who moved to Massey this year from Union. We discussed what I did there last year with 3rd grade and his tech needs for the year to come. We decided that training on document cameras would probably be good and that the once-a-week workshops on a particular day of the week were very successful at Union and that we should try it here. After sycning the Palm I made sure C.J. Wiedert knew how to fix any other problems that come up.
I then went to Kiser Intermediate to check out their broadcast/powerpoint system. I want to check the systems at each school to try and get them all operational. So far I know these:
Pumpkin Int - ppt and broadcast system set but comp is down
Pumpkin Pri - ??
Rock Springs - ppt not connected, work order in, broadcast works
Love - ??
Cat Springs -
St. James - Broadcast up, ppt???
Iron Station - Broadcast up, ppt?
Massey - ??
Lowder - ??
Battleground - ppt up, broadcast in progress
Love - ??
Union - ??
Childers - broadcast up, ppt ??
North Brook - ??
In the afternoon I met with Lee O'Neal and discussed a number of topics, including ITS collaboration, parts for Smartboards, computer specs at elementaries and education city pros and cons.
Tomorrow I will try to contact schools with new media specialists and set up meetings.

This morning I helped Mr. Welch at S. Ray Lowder install new RAM in the older machines in their lab. This doubles them to 256, making them much easier to use. Steven agreed with me that this was a good choice. The RAM was left over from Pumpkin Primary and would not have made much of a difference in their machines. I am going to save the rest to use on various computers around the county.
I also discussed the upcoming Elementary principals meeting with Welch. He may want me to help him showcase his projectors in 3rd grade classrooms. That meeting is towards the end of the month.
After I left Lowder, I went by Love Memorial to speak with Jennifer Gibson, the new media specialist. She was their tech mentor last year. We talked about a few upcoming ideas for technology workshops.

I started today by meeting with S. Ray Lowder's new lab teacher assistant Kathy Walker. She will be working in the lab on Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays. The plan seems to be that teachers will ususally send their kids into the lab with their assistant and Kathy.
Kathy has already created a form that asks teachers what they want the kids to work on. This is a great idea so that lab time doesn't turn into play time or drill time. We worked on using the Smartboard and creating notebook files for it. We also discussed bookmarking. I am going to set her and the other lab assistants up on delicious so they can share bookmarks.
I also showed her a number of programs that Lowder has. They seem to be using Education City as well as GCompris. I need to find out if they are using the data collection of education city and then do some staff development on that and classcape.

I got an e-mail shortly after 8 a.m. from Battleground. Seems they had another Palm go belly-up. I spent some time creating a how-to so that teachers could reset Palms that lose the info. I forwarded it to Lee and Diana Carpenter at Battleground.
I also spent some time researching the Dibels program in general so I can offer better support.
After lunch I went to Pumpkin Intermediate and spoke with the media coordinator about several tech issues, including moving a few computers and plans for the Smart Board that is presently underutilized.
I also spoke with Lee about getting quotes on USB cables and other parts for several Smartboards around the county.

Finshed up my PGP this morning. It just needs a once-over before I send it to Glenda. I met with Linda Yoder for about an hour this morning. We worked on her wiki and discussed plans for integrating science and tech this year. I showed her Delicious bookmarking and she was impressed. We are going to try setting up a few select science teachers and making grade level groups to share web sites.
After Lunch I went to Battleground to work on their Smart Board. Unfortunately, the computer they have that works with the old Smartboard cable is too slow to run Smart Software effectively. I will double check with Lee. She was going to price out a Smart USB connector so they can use a new comp. We need one at Rock Springs as well.

Today started with a breakfast and meeting of the Instructional Services Center team. We got an update for our handbook.
Afterwards I returned to the mobile and worked on my PGP for a while, completing the first two goals.
Mid morning I got a call from Lee O'Neal and we went to Battleground to work on a Diblels Palm that was malfunctioning. Turns out it had reset over the summer and lost the teacher's login information. We also met with the new librarian Karen Dellinger and discussed ways to utlilize some of the unused tech and AV equipment there, including a small rolling Smartboard.
At 2:45 I met with the new media specialist at Rock Springs, Rebekah Stanton. We got her broadcast equimpent working and I suggested having ITS put in a connection to her computer so she can show ppts on the broadcast system. and disucssed future activities including a lesson unit on elections that she will do with classes. She wants to be able to show campaign ads and is having some problems getting them to show on her computer. We also discussed plans for staff development, with the first workshop probably being on e-mail.

First two weeks
Back to school. This post is a bit of a roundup of the first week back. I started with new teacher induction on Aug. 13-15. I assisted with setup and shot some movie clips of the activities. On the first day I did a quick 15-minute introduction to e-mail and L-core with all new elementary teachers. Dr. Martin approached me with the idea of creating a video with student pictures zooming out of a globe. He wanted to use this at convocation. I started working on a demo of it that night
On the second day I mainly took some video and helped Lee O'Neal with setup. Thursday night I edited together the footage shot on the first two days to show to the new teachers. After the workshop was over I went to see Belinda Branson to discuss the photo story and movie.
On Friday I did an hour presentation on ed-tech, my job, L-Core, e-mail and web sites with the "new new" teachers. They seem to be pretty tech-savvy and interested in integrating tech. The do seem to be a bit overwhelmed though, which is only natural.
On Monday I worked with Belinda and got the pictures, sound and ppt for the presentation. I began working on the video and powerpoint. I also stopped by Pumpkin Primary and helped set up the library projector and doc cam.
On Tuesday I took the finished ppt to North Lincoln where we tested everything. Steven and his crew at ITS have done a great job of getting this ready.
On Wednesday we did convocation and it went off well. Dr. Martin did a "David Letterman" style format with really funny interviews of kids. After convocation I help Glenda Walker set up for elementary staff development. I was going to bring some flyers by but there were not enough left. I will instead print more later and take them directly to the schools. I may try and get a few minutes at each school's first regular faculty meeting.
Thursday I assisted Lee by proctoring make-up English EOCs. Afterwards I went to the office and cleared up files and mail from the summer. Internet was down at the office and I contacted Chip.
On Friday morning I did some planning for the first few weeks. I set up the scanner and tested a donated microscope. Chip came early afternoon and fixed the Internet access. I spent the rest of the afternoon planning this blog, going through e-mails and thinking about my PGP.

An online Journal
Welcome. This year I plan to use this blog to track and reflect on my daily work as an Instructional Technology facilitator in Lincoln County Schools. Feel free to comment and tell me how well I am doing or what I need to work on!
